Ancient Chinese wooden architecture, Choi Lin Chan

We open our Engineering sketch of the week series with the Engineering Sketches Prize 2018 winning student entry under the Historical Studies category.

UCL Civil Engineering student Choi Lin Chan’s A3 historical study of Ancient Chinese wooden architecture features the Great East Hall of Foguang Temple. It is the third oldest timber structure in China and is a high-ranking hall (Dian Tang) of the Tang Dynasty. This sketch illustrates some interesting features of this wooden architecture including the joineries without fasteners, the layout and the layers of the hall.

The Engineering Prize is run by the Engineering Club in association with D R A W I N G A T W O R K and headline sponsor – Whitbybird Foundation.
