COURSE BREAKDOWN

This is a practical course designed to provide a thorough experience of colour as a phenomenon and a silent communicator of meaning. The work we do is informative; the sketchbook- based exercises are compact and easy to continue beyond the duration of the course.

COURSE CONTENT

Working with designers gouache the first three classes give a comprehensive hands-on knowledge of

  • Accurate colour mixing, classification and matching
  • Colour families and sub-groups of the colour wheel to include: complementary greys, earth coloured neutrals, colour triads, analogous colour, found colour, dominant and subordinate colour.
  • Simple and complex combinations of hue, value, and saturation.
  • Colour tints and tones.
  • Opacity, transparency, and staining.

In the last two sessions we will make colour models from found materials, coloured gels and projected light that can be assembled in quick spatial improvisations. The results will be source material for small paintings that study the effects of light and colour saturation.

We will look at historical examples of colour studies by Josef Albers, Turner, and contemporary artists and designers as a backdrop to practical exercises. You will complete the course with a sketchbook of studies, photographs, practical colour notes, and small colour exercises that will continue to generate ideas every time you return to them.

The CPD Talk Lessons in Colour and Perception is included in the course.
